About the Long-tailed Tit

• Its scientific name is Aegithalos caudatus japonicus, and it is a Hokkaido subspecies of the long-tailed tit. It is a small wild bird, about 14cm long and weighing only 8-10g.
• In winter, its entire face turns white, giving it an adorable appearance known as the "snow fairy." While long-tailed tits in Honshu have an eyebrow stripe, the Hokkaido long-tailed tit does not.
• It primarily eats insects and spiders, but in winter, it also eats tree buds and sap. It often acts in groups and makes "chee-chee" calls.
• It inhabits forests from plains to mountains in Hokkaido, and in winter, it can sometimes appear in urban parks.
• In recent years, its popularity has exploded on social media, and it has become known nationwide as a cute wild bird representing Hokkaido.

About the Photographer

Hazuki Hirai — Born in Aichi Prefecture, currently residing in Kamifurano Town, Hokkaido. In February 2017, she was captivated by the snowy scenery of Kyoto and became interested in the world of photography. In September of the same year, when she visited Hokkaido alone for photography, she was fascinated by the landscapes woven by abundant nature and the wild animals living robustly in a harsh environment, leading her to decide to move there in December 2018. She primarily photographs natural landscapes and wild animals, and her works have been featured in numerous media outlets, including Digital Camera Magazine. She also produces official sample works for the Sony α series and is actively involved in exhibitions such as the Tokyo Camera Club Photo Exhibition and her solo exhibition "Color of Northlandscape" at Sony Store Sapporo.
