About the Long-tailed Tit (Shima Enaga)

The "Snow Fairy" lives only in Hokkaido. Unlike the long-tailed tits on Honshu, the Shima Enaga is characterized by its pure white face without black markings.

  • Subspecies endemic to Hokkaido: "Shima" means "island" = Hokkaido. It is a Hokkaido subspecies of the long-tailed tit, with the scientific name Aegithalos caudatus. It is approximately 14cm long and weighs only 8-10g (about half the weight of a sparrow).
  • Origin of the name: Enaga means "long handle." It was named for its long tail, which resembles the handle of a ladle.
  • Winter appearance: To protect themselves from the cold, they puff up their feathers with air, becoming perfectly round. In summer, they have fewer feathers and appear slimmer.
  • Huddling together: In winter, they spend time in flocks of about 10 birds, and are popular for their adorable sight of huddling together on the same branch like dumplings.
  • Habitat: They inhabit forests in low mountains and lowlands. In Hokkaido, they are often seen in Japanese elm and Manchurian ash trees.
