About the Steller's Sea Eagle

  • Its main habitats are the Russian Far East and the Amur River basin, and it visits drift ice areas such as the Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido in winter to overwinter.
  • It is a large raptor measuring 80-100cm in length and with a wingspan exceeding 2m, making it one of Japan's representative wild birds.
  • It is designated as an endangered species, and its current population is limited worldwide, with strict protection especially in Japan.
  • It possesses excellent hunting ability, rapidly preying on fish that appear in cracks in the drift ice.
  • With beautiful black and white contrasting plumage, it has been revered as "Washi" (eagle) in Japan since ancient times.

About the Photographer

Natsumi Handa - Born in Asahikawa, Hokkaido in 1986. While working as a nurse in a hospital ward, she photographs Hokkaido's wildlife on her days off and after night shifts. She started photography in 2013 and, in just a few years, has won numerous awards in national and international photo contests, including 2nd place in the Country Award (Japan) at the "Sony World Photography Awards 2017". She has published photo books 'Pirka' and 'Kamuy', capturing the beautiful fur, adorable expressions, and the cycle of life of animals.

February, when drift ice visits the waters off Rausu on Hokkaido's Shiretoko Peninsula. Steller's sea eagles arrive from Russia to overwinter, and return to Russia in March. The white of the drift ice. The deep blue of the sea visible through the cracks. Their soaring figures. The shattering ice crystals. All of it is beautiful.
