About the Ezo Squirrel
- Scientific name: Sciurus vulgaris orientis - A subspecies of the Eurasian red squirrel endemic to Hokkaido, this is an adorable wild animal found only on Hokkaido.
- Habitat - Widely distributed in coniferous and mixed forests, from lowlands to mountains in Hokkaido.
- Arboreal lifestyle - Highly arboreal, territorial, and active year-round.
- Diet - Eats nuts, seeds, tree buds, berries, mushrooms, etc., and stores food for winter.
- Conservation status - Not currently an endangered species, but habitat conservation is important.
About the Photographer
Hiroki Inoue - Wildlife photographer born in Sapporo in 1979, currently residing in Higashikawa Town. In 2016, he won 1st place in the Nature category of National Geographic's "TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR" for "Fox Chase," becoming the first Japanese person to do so. In 2017, he appeared on "Jounetsu Tairiku." His published works include "Romantic Forest: Animals of the Fairy Tale Forest" and "Letter from the North."
