About the Ezo Tanuki (Hokkaido Raccoon Dog)
A subspecies of raccoon dog native to Hokkaido. Larger than the Honshu raccoon dog, it is characterized by its fluffy winter coat and rounded appearance.
- Hokkaido's Endemic Subspecies: Belongs to the Canidae family, genus Nyctereutes. Measures 50-60cm in length and weighs 4-8kg. Before winter hibernation, its weight increases by nearly 1.5 times compared to summer.
- Omnivorous: Does not hunt, instead consuming various items such as nuts, insects, animal carcasses, and invertebrates.
- Nocturnal: Inhabits forested areas and prefers watersides. Rarely seen in urban areas.
- Winter Appearance: Develops a long winter coat in preparation for the cold, resulting in a fluffy, rounded appearance. In summer, it has a slender physique.
- Lifespan: Approximately 6-8 years in the wild. Possesses a cautious personality, short legs, and is not adept at running or hunting.

Kei Sato - An animal photographer dedicated to documenting Hokkaido's wildlife
Born in Rumoi City, Hokkaido, in 1979. Representative of SLASH Photo Office, OM SYSTEM PRO SERVICE member, and MILLET ambassador. For over 10 years, he has continuously climbed Daisetsuzan, documenting the ecology of Ezo chipmunks and Ezo pikas.
