About Ezo Deer

• Ezo deer are the largest deer in Japan, inhabiting Hokkaido, and can weigh between 100kg and 150kg.
• They are highly adaptable animals that remain active even in deep snow during winter, feeding on tree bark and moss.
• They change color with the seasons as their summer coat is replaced by a winter coat.
• Their silent walk through the forest is an iconic sight of Hokkaido's nature.
• Known as "Yuku" in the Ainu language, they have lived alongside the people of Hokkaido since ancient times.

About the Photographer

Natsumi Handa - Born in Asahikawa, Hokkaido in 1986. While working as a nurse on hospital wards, she photographs Hokkaido's wildlife after night shifts and on her days off. She began photography in 2013 and has won numerous awards in national and international photo contests, including 2nd place in the Country Award (Japan) at the "Sony World Photography Awards 2017." She has published photo books 'Pirka' and 'Kamuy,' capturing the beautiful fur, adorable expressions, and the cycle of life of animals.
