About the Ezo Stoat
The "Ezo Stoat" is a small hunter that inhabits Hokkaido. A member of the weasel family, it is a beautiful animal whose fur changes from brown in summer to pure white in winter.
- Scientific name: Mustela erminea orientalis. It measures 15-20cm in body length, and the tip of its tail remains black year-round.
- White winter appearance: Its entire body turns pure white in winter as camouflage to blend into the snow. This white fur is called "ermine" and was once used for royal garments.
- Agile hunter: Though small, it is fierce and preys on rabbits and mice larger than itself. It has a high metabolic rate and is constantly active.
- Curious: It sometimes observes humans without fleeing, and its adorable appearance is popular.
- Rarity: Classified as near-threatened, it is extremely difficult to photograph in the wild.
