About the Blakiston's Fish Owl (Fukuchan)

  • Extremely Rare and Endangered Species: Scientific name: Ketupa blakistoni. Listed as an "endangered species with increasing risk" in Japan's Red Data Book. Designated as Endangered by IUCN in 2016. It is one of the rarest owls in the world and is endemic to Hokkaido.
  • Nighttime Fish Hunting Specialist: Body length of 70-80 cm. Specializes in living near rivers that do not freeze even in winter. Possesses advanced hunting skills, deftly snatching fish from the water surface at night. Equipped with astonishing hearing that allows it to locate prey by listening to the sound of flowing water.
  • Huge Nests in Ancient Trees: Nests in tree hollows of large trees several hundred years old. Requires tall and healthy riparian forests. Such environments have drastically decreased due to human development, leading to a decline in the owl population.
  • Monogamous with Lifelong Mates: Once paired, they remain together for life. Their duet calls are known as a sound symbolizing Hokkaido's nature, and their calls are an expression of deep and earnest love.
  • Survival Strategy of Thousands of Years: An ancient lineage that survived the Ice Age, with current populations numbering only a few hundred birds. Protecting the future of this globally most valuable owl is a top priority for nature conservation in Hokkaido.
